I did this right after I bought my E12 last year. The sequence that Troy listed is correct; The only tip I have to add is be sure and get the right size Torx driver to remove the filter. I almost hosed up bigtime by using a size too small and I stripped one of the fasteners. I was luckily able to get it off with a pair of channellocks. The fasteners require a relatively small Torx, making them very easy to strip. My filter did look fairly clean when I changed it out, but it was relatively cheap, and came with a new gasket.
