Keep in mind that I've never done this and am just reading the BMW Service manual. Where appropriate I'll use exact quotes.

The procedure says
1) remove the drive flange from the axle shaft.
2) "remove the lock plate from the collar nut."
3) "unscrew the collar nut."
4) "pull off the drive flange." The picture does not show a puller.
5) remove rear brake rotor (disc).
6) screw the collar nut on the axle shaft and drive out the rear axle shaft. The picture show a ~4lb shop hammer.
7) "Knock out wheel bearings and shaft seals."

Notes for replacement.
1) Knock in the outer ball bearing until it fits tight.
2) inpect the spacer and radial oil seal on axle shaft. replace if necessary.
3) be certain to replace the lock plate on the collar nut of the rear axle shaft.
4) check wheel bearing surfaces on hub for scoring. (I think they mean on the where the inner "foundation" of the ball bearing rides.)
