I have a genuine "BMW Repair Manual" for the car. The description of the procedure to remove the "steering lock/ignition switch" is somewhat terse, but seems easier than the methods described by other postings. (I'm not contradicting anyone, because I haven't done it myself' I'm just quoting a book.)
The book says:
1) Disconnect ground wire at battery.
2) Remove the lower casing on the steering column.
3) Disconnect the wires that are in the way.
4) Position the ignition key at the "O". Make sure the marks on the cylinder and case align.
5) Unplug the ignition switch harness.
6) Remove switch and harness together.
Not terribly discriptive, but that's what it says. If you like, I can scan both pages and email them to you.
