I totally agree with you on what this does to the advance curve of
the engine. My engine has 9.5:1 compression and when I did this "trick"
my car ran terrible, like timing was way retarded, and yes it did run
hot. I agree if you want to play with less advance of the distributor
try stiffer springs on the advance weights. I'd say the BMW/Bosch engineers
knew what they were doing when they designed the ignition system/advance curve.
