There should be alignment marks on both the crankshaft pulley and the timing gear. Line these up. When the crankshaft pulley is lined up, the no. 1 piston will be at TDC. When the cam is in the right position, the valves for cylinder no.1 will both be fully closed. You should be able to check the valve lash on them at this time.
Make sure you leave the no. 1 cylinder at TDC until you reinstall the distributor.
: Hi, Guys! Long time, no see! I've been lost since
: the UOW 528i page was closed. Okay, here's the problem.
: I've got an 80 528i auto with a cracked head. This
: happened on Valentine's day (in Vegas, no less, 300 miles
: from home). I towed the car back and it's been sitting
: in my garage ever since. On the old InfoBoard, someone
: gave me step-by-step directions for assuring that the valves
: are timed correctly. I believe there was a TDC marking on
: the valve train. Can anyone give me the instructions on how
: to time the valves when I finally get around to putting
: a new head on it? Winter's coming, and my summer car will have
: to go into storage before it gets rainy. Besides that,
: I miss my 5! If you can help, e-mail me at tedb@opticalres.com
