When my E12 idles poorly but runs fine when under load, I always suspect a vacuum leak first. Check every little connection, even the dipstick. The shop might have jarred something when doing some work, and it isn't obviously loose. Check everything

: Yes rain can be the problem and the tank would need to be compleetly drained. But for arguments sake lets say its not water. Here is a check list that I just did on my 530i.
: Check the Plugs (USE ONLY RECOMENDED PLUGS and Gap them properly (there are people who don't do this))
: Check the points
: Check the dwell
: Check the timing
: Check the distributer cap for corosion as well as the distributer its self. There is also a button (resister) in the distributer as well if this goes your car will run badly and surge.
