: Well, after only 17 years and 146k miles, the locking mechanism on my drivers door has taken a powder. For the last few months, I have had to be careful not to pull up on the outside handle while the door was locked, or the lock would get jammed up & not unlock very easily. The other day it got worse. Now, if I lock the door from the outside with the key, it jams up & will not unlock with the key or by pulling up the inside knob. If I reach in from the rear door & push down the lock from the inside to lock the car, I can unlock with the key just fine. I have had the door panel off, but I am not sure what items are worn out & what I should replace. I am hoping I don't have to get a new lock with a different key. Can anybody tell me how to fix my lock? Thanks.

cliff,
sorry to hear that but it's not going to be a cheap or easy fix. i had the same problem and still haven't been able to fully fix it but it works. first off hanes or chiltin has no info. on this-go figure-.the part that has gone kaput is the actual lock mechanisim that latches the door to the "b" pillar. the return spring is either gone or broke, mine broke. it would be easy to replace the spring but guess what you can't.so you have to buy the whole part.trick to this is that when you replace the latch assy. the pull tht attaches to the motor for those with central locks- and up through the door panel is rivited to the latch assy. drill your old one out and get the rivit pieces also they are still oem available.and if you can or a shop have it rivited to the new latch assy. if you have any questions e-mail me (mcgehe@s6.hninc.com)i have done this opperation at least 100 times to get it right.good luck:)
