I just read through procedures in the BMW 528i Service Manual to remove the heater core. Unforturnately, you are correct. You have to
1) remove the entire center section of console where the heat/AC controls are,
2) remove the heat/AC controls themselves,
3) remove the AC fan/evaporator,
4) remove the heater assy. from the car,
5) then remove the core from the heater assy.
The instruction refer to two different sections of the manual. My guess is that it would take me about three hours to get the heater assy. out of the car.
If you want to do this yourself (and you are a BMWCCA member), you might want to see if you can borrow a 528i service manual from the club library. Once upon a time, they had one.
Or, you might call Terry Sayther at 1.512.442.1361 to ask for a referral to someone in California who can do it for you. He knows a great many BMW service people - even in CA. He also sells used parts if you need any.
