: i've got a nightmare to tackle

Well. TO paraphrase our fearless leader, That depends on the definition of "a". You actually have SEVERAL nightmares ahead of you. You just don't know it yet.

:this time around and i'am wondering if any one out there can help.

Prayer would help, but as the good Lord said, "You still have to put in the effort."

Your mechanic is a smart man. He's a businessman and must bill for his time. Imagine your bill for the $150 part, and $3500 for labor!

I have stripped many an E-12, since I consider them more of a parts donor for my BAVARIA, than a car to be driven (I have had somewhere around 4 e-12's over the last 10 years, so no flames, please). The console has to come out. Completely out. The A/C is the easy part. Disconnect the electric connectors, the A/c lines, and the panel that holds the fan switch, clock, and the vent cables.

BEWARE! the fan switch also has the temp control. If you examine this switch, you will find a metalic tube that runs from the switch to the A/C evaporator. YOU MUST NOT BREAK THIS TUBE! remove it from the evap housing. Try not to disconnect the cables that make the vents function. You will also see two black pastic tubes that have butterfly joints. These work other vents, and will probably have to come out. Be careful. There are tabs on the butterfly joints that will disconnect them.

With the evap unit out, and most everything else disconnected and hanging, you should be able to get to the heater box. Don'y forget there are two hoses under the hood that need to be disconnected.

I forget all the bolts that have to come out, but i never really had a problem getting these things out.

And as Haynes is famous for saying: Reassembly is the reverse of the disassenbly.

Never had to put one back in before.
