The plug number (2) is actually on the plug if you look on the side of the connector in the fuse box. This circuit supplies the relay with 12v only during the start and run phase. There wont be 12v's all the time. Continuous voltage comes in on the red wire at terminal 88z.

Scott called me at the office today. I had my owner's manual here and it had a better schemo. Just exactly what you said. Although I think my Haynes showed the connection for 78 530i, it's obviously not there.
