According to my wiring diagram, pin 1 of the ECU on a 528i receives the pulse from the ignition system. The wire at the bottom of the resistor pack next to the ignition control unit goes to the starter. From there it runs through the starter relay to pin 1 of the diagnostic plug in the fuse box. Pin 1 of the ECU is connected to pin 1 of the diagnostic plug in the fuse box.
Assuming that 1) the diagram is correct and 2) I am reading it correctly. This description corresponds with a vague memory I have of installing a Jacobs ignition system about 10 years ago.
