The e12 caliper, which is 4 piston like Greg noted, were used in variety of cars. The differences being the width of the caliper spacer that allowed different width discs.
From what I remember, these are the cars that used these calipers.:
CS coupes- VR (vented rotors)
Bavaria- NVR (non vented rotors)
e12 (early)- NVR
e12 (late)- VR
1st generation 6 series-VR
1st generation 7 series-VR (thickest rotors of all)
some 2nd gen 7 s- VR
e28 M5s- VR
2002 Tii- NVR
When working, these are very good brakes.
I gathered this info based on the rebuild kit part numbers and my trips to the local e12 parts store (wrecking yard).
