This is probably your best tip, unless you go to the trouble of retrofitting a MAF sensor in place of the AFM. The AFM is the bad guy, flowing more poorly than the airbox out front. Just stick a K&N in the stock box, poke a hole through the plastic headlight cover, extend the snorkel through the cover & call it a day. Then make sure to avoid big puddles on the side of the street. The cone filter straight to the AFM is no bueno on anything but a track car- and even then not great. You just suck up hot exhaust manifold air & lose power. Don't give into the hype!! there is NOT 20 hidden h.p. in your air cleaner. Now the exhaust on a stock 79-81 528i is a different story...
: I haven't done it myself, but I've heard of folks running tubing all the way to the plastic cover around the headlights, then cutting a hole in that plastic cover to fit the tubbing into. Sorta like some kind of cheapo ram air type system I guess.
