Car of the Month - January 2001
Cars of the Month
The Car of the Month for January belongs to:
Klaus Wiehl
For the new century, here is Klaus Wiehl's South African M530.
This homologation special is number 77 of only 201 identical M530's built
exclusively for competition in South Africa by BMW Motorsport in 1976. My
car is unrestored and almost totaly original. All M530's were only available
in white with spoilers, wheel arch spats, and Motorsport stripes. Portions
of the body are aluminium, and lighter guage steel with punched holes for
weight reduction. The interior is decked out in a rich navy blue velour with
front Scheel bucket seats. The 3 litre motor is factory modified, and mated
to a Getrag 5 Speed close ratio dogleg box. Bilstein gas shocks, a limited
slip diff, and four piston brake calipers with vented discs complete the
mechanical picture. Performance particulars are 147kw (200hp), 277Nm at 4300r/min,
0-100km in 9,3 secs, with a top speed of 208km/h....heady stuff in 1976 !
The car rides on the original BBS Mahle 14" 7J alloys. My car is pretty much
a Sunday cruiser, spending most of her time tucked away. I can honestly say
I am obsessed by her charm and turn of speed, the admiring glances she gets,
and proud of the fact that she is one of the last of her kind in existence.
