5 speed conversion
Back to Frequently asked questions
To convert from 4-spd to 5-spd manual, you'll need the following parts
from the donor car:
1) transmision,
1.5) Motronic bellhousing & flywheel if planning to go Motronic
2) driveshaft,
3) shifter w/ mountings,
4) speedo cable,
5) crossmember and mounts,
6) Some Redline MTL to fill the new trans. (It makes a difference.)
You should be able to find all of this for $700 - $1000 depending on the
mileage and your area.
The 4-spd to 5-spd conversion is not difficult. The most difficult task,
was to "bench press" the 95 pound transmission into the
exact position and then hold it up while sliding it forward to push the
input shaft into the clutch disc.
The 265/6 did come on all 80-81 cars, early 528e, all 85 cars and of
course the E30 M3.
: : The '80-'81 5/6/7 are the only ones with an internal speedo drive.
: : The clutch housing from any of the above cars will work.
: : However the later one's are set up for Motronic, which
: : is a nifty upgrade for performance-i.e. chip.
: : Also keep in mind that any BIG SIX 4 speed car ALSO
: : has the bell housing that you need. Those are much more plentiful!
To convert from an automatic to 5-speed, I guess you would need all the
above plus clutch & brake pedals, clutch master cylinder & slave, &
possibly the interior console from a manual car if you were going for
cosmetic correctness.
