Got it running again. Seems the AFM is going out. Going to have to pick one up and should be good to go.

Won't stay running

Hello evryone, I have a 80 528i I am trying to get running after sitting for months. Before I put it away it would periodically not want to start, typically when warm. Usually let it sit for half an hour and would fire up, inconvenient but not so much to warrant repair at the time. Fast forward ...

Found a few tid bits of information tucked away here: http://www.firstfives.org/bboard/viewto ... sc&start=0

Looks like as long as I have the "bulges" on case I should be able to add the B32 crank and bore to the B32 pistons. 194 hp 210 lb·ft

Have been doing some research, the M90 is very intriguing. Haven't seen this one mentioned before.

Everywhere I am looking I am coming up with the same data. North American, not European.

The data I'm looking at shows the HP/TQ for the stock B28 to be 181/180 with a compression ratio of 9.3:1. While the B34 to stand at 182/210 and compression ratio to be at 8:1. Seems like a lot of work for minimal gains in this instance, unless you were to raise the CR on the B34.

Ideal candidate for 3.5l swap?

Been looking through the FAQ's and searching but there is lack luster information and it is difficult to sift through.

At some point I will be doing a 3.5 swap, but would like to make sure I am picking the right donor. I would love to be able just to move over all accessories and "drop" in the ...

I got it on mine when I was pulling the transmission. Had the drive shaft out, and the transmission crossmember. Once those were out of the way, I got a 3 foot 3/8" exstension with a universal joint on the end. Was able to get that in there no probably.

Final update:

I was compairing the new TQ against the old one, only to realize that the splines inside of the old TQ had smoothed over. The input splines were perfect still. Pre-filled the TQ, put everything back together and away I drove.

Small update:

Pulled the transmission out. The torque converter is toast. The splines inside move all around and spin in either direction. New one is getting ordered tomorrow morning, and will get slapped in, in a few days.

It will probably end up being a few weeks before I can pull the transmission and inspect it. I am getting ready to help my bud overall the air suspension on his chevy truck, drop a rebuilt engine into a Datsun pickup, another engine in a old triumph bonnenville and a few other things before I can ...

Nick,

Not sure where you are located but most people here just about give away extra auto transmissions. Lately looks like many cars are being parted maybe a post in for / sale wanted would give you another option.

That doesn't seem to be the case down in here in Houston. I found a salvage yard ...

Nick, this may sound silly, but to cover all bases, when you re-filled your tranny, with fluid not oil, did you warm the engine real good, put the tranny in Park on level ground & check the level after putting it through ALL gears?

I used Dexron III as specified from all the locations I looked ...

Good and bad news.

Good news: Everyday I learn more about troubleshooting transmissions. Changed out the filter and oil, a little sludge in the pan but nothing crazy. Good pump pressure before and after the cooler, so it's not clogged.

Bad news: Still not fixed. Perhaps pointing to the torque ...
