Test coolant temp sensor

Post by T.Hanson »

The sensor has two flat pins on top.

Set multimeter on Ohms. Touch each pin with one probe. Red or black makes no difference. Check resistance reading.

Submerge sensor stem in hot water. Check resistance reading again.

Did I do good so far ? What am I checking ? Yes, no ? On off ? Low, high ?

It's a NCT sensor, Negative Coefficient Temperature sensor, meaning resistance decreases as temperature increases. I'll try to look it up later, but I think there are 3 different ranges for specific temps in the manual. If you search Mye28 it's probably there, but I'll be out of town for a couple of days so remind me if you still need it and I don't post again tonight.

There is no polarity, but resistance decreases with an increase in temp.

I'm rehashing an old thread.

The CTS, is it not a one-pin sensor atop the thermostat housing?

The single pin is for the temp gauge, the two is for the FI.
