So I'm up under my '80 528 and notice that there are two mounting "forks" cast into my 5 speed box. The mount on it now is bolted to the fork closer to the motor-side. The other mount location is just "hanging". Is this normal? The reason I ask is I noticed a little "shudder/slop" in the drive line under light acceleration. The drive shaft seems decent enough as well as the center bearing and guibos. The rear diff mount is solid as well.. Would mounting on the rear-most position on the gear box help?
Thanks!

It was explained to me by a dealer tech. this way. There was only one mount installed on 'our cars' from the factory. The reason is that the torque exerted is not enough to warrant two mounts like later (E28?) models, and the rotation of the engine is the reason the Motherland chose the mount side they did. That is not to say one can't fabricate/install another on the other side but for a stock setup it isn't necessary.
I suspect your complaint is related to 'old age' in the now plenty-worn differential. i have that, too, but I've learned how to 'drive it out' by careful acceleration/deceleration to the point I'm not even conscious I do it. If someone else (rarely) drives my car then it is quite apparent!
Good luck.
