Well, that's kind of a broad question to ask, especially on a discussion board for 30+ year-old cars.
All 30-year old cars are inherently "unreliable" because of age.
The Japanese cars I've owned (mostly Nissans and Infinitis) I would characterize as being more reliable than their German counterparts under less-than-ideal maintenance conditions. Parts were expensive, and it was not always easy to fix them.
The German cars I've owned, if maintained as intended by Klaus, Hermann, and Gunther, were more reliable than my Japanese cars, parts are cheaper, and they have generally been easier to work on. However, if you're dealing with a German car that has an iffy maintenance history, all bets are off.
This assumes you do the work yourself. If a dealership is involved, all bets are off, again. I've also found Audis to be generally more tempermental than BMW's. I've also found Mercedes parts to be much more expensive than BMW parts.
My personal experience only; I'm sure others will have other insight.
