Hi all, I did some searching last night but I'm not sure I used the right phrases because I couldn't figure out the answer...

I just picked up a set of 16" BBS basketweaves from an E28.

They are 8Jx16H2 ET24

So, that's an 8" deep, 16" rim with a 24mm offset, right? Right.

Does this mean I need spacers?

The ridiculous part are the 205/65's on the rims - the sidewalls are stretched so wide I have NO idea how they were installed. There is no way these things were safe to drive like this. Craziness.

Not bad for $50, though.

I'm curious to see how this comes along, I bought 16x8 style4s for my bav, if the e12 is similar it should be around a 5mm spacer or so my research has been concluding.

How stretched are you? 225 seems the appropriate size for 8" but I believes ran snowtires on stock m3 contours on my old e36 at 205s and they were stretched but les schwab said it was safe and they backed it with a warranty :dunno

5mm, eh? How did you come to that conclusion, because I am stymied.

I bought an M30 out of an old Bavaria, there are pictures in that same album - twin Zenith's in this case.

And I found and article on bimmerforums of a guy with et20 16"x8 running 225s with a 5mm spacer in the front. My style 135's (18x 7.5?) fit the rears but didn't even want to go on the fronts (wasn't seriously considering that but just wanted to see how the fitament looked like on my bav

Here's the front clearance for the 16x8 style 4's on my 528:


Depending on the sidewall / width of the tyre, they should clear without any spacers.

FYI - the 205's are perfectly safe, i'm considering running the same.
I've seen people run 185's on 8" wide rims haha. I would never, however.

Are you sure all four of those wheels are 16x8? Those sets were usually sold as 16x7 ET11 and 16x8 ET24. They also require 44mm long lug bolts as the centers of the wheels are thicker than standard BMW wheels. That's a problem for folks with the pre-facelift cars since y'all have studs.

You should meander over to www.stanceworks.com and see what some of those people are putting on 8" wide wheels. 205 ain't no thang.

Correct sizing for the E12 is 205/55/16 on the 7" wheels and 225/50/16 on the 8s.

I don't have style 4s. I was referring to the wheels in the original post - BBS RAs. I have many of those in addition to many other BBS, Hartge and Alpina wheels.

Hmm - I'll check that out in the daylight. I never would have thought they'd be two pairs instead of a set of four.

IF they are ET11 and ET24's would that change anything with regards to requiring spacers?

Spacers would not be required. It is a set of four, since as I said, they were sold as staggered sets in 16".

Had a close look at all four wheels and they are ALL 8Jx16H2 ET24's.

... What now?

The 205's on them look bulbous on the sidewalls, it's odd-looking. I will try to get a picture.

The stock offset is 22mm. I'm not a fan of having the offset closer (numerically higher) to the strut than stock on the front wheels.

Your picture indicates the wheel is very close to the strut. There is a touch of flexing going on along with variances in tire construction, so there's a good chance your tire will rub the strut. You don't want the tire rubbing the strut. You REALLY don't want the wheel to rub the strut...

I also have four BBS RAs similar to yours (going on an E23, but similar fittment to an E12) and I will be using 5mm spacers. I'm not even sure I will have enough clearance with 225 tires and if not, I will have to move to 10mm spacers in front.

By the way, you will only need spacers for the front. You don't need them for the rear.

how new are the tyres? Stretched tyres tend to show age much more then prolly fitted tyres, mine were a bit stretch and super old and you could tell the rubber was beginning to break down
