Fuelling problems on my 76' 520i...

Hi, I've just brought my e12 520i from a guy who found it locked up in a garage since 1989', it's had a good service but I'm having some problems with the fuelling side of things.
The car will start but it won't idol and if it stalls it will not re start and floods itself. I've been told this maybe due to the Cold start injector/ metering head however I'm not 100% where either of these are :S
I'm very new to the L-jetronic system so any help from you guys would be awesome! Ill get some pics up of the car soon too

Thanks
Arron

I am a bit confused, you say L-jet, but a E12 520 (m10 engine, right?) should have the mechanical Kugelfischer injection.
If so, congratulations, you have quite a rare E12. If not, you can ignore everything I write after this
If so, forget about anything you know about regular (common rail low-pressure) gasoline injection systems. The Kugelfischer resembles more a classic diesel injection with a rotative high pressure injection pump.
The injection pressure is high, 400 - 500PSI so be careful playing around.
I'd first check the ignition on the car (timing), leads, spark plugs, then indeed locate the cold start injector, and check if it stuck open.
I have never seen such an injection close-by, but judging from pictoes and drawings, the cold start injector is on top of the intake, near the round cap, in the picture below I can see what I suppose is the black fuel hose and the electrical wires going to it:

I recall that the injection pump itself can give trouble after a long period of inactivity, some plungers / valves get stuck, but supposedly just running the engine will fix these issues in time.
Be careful / selective of who you let work on this car. Not many people understand these systems, look for a specialist. Post on a board for 2002, the 2002 tii had the same engine, there is more knowledge out there.

Aha! I was lead to believe it was an L-jetronic, I was wrong!
Yes it's an m10 and like you say a pretty rare beast!
Really appreciate the help, ill take a look at the parts that you have specified/ shown in the illustrations. I had read that it was the same as the 2000/2002 tii so ill get onto one of those sites if the problem persists

Thanks again

This is interesting. I can only find one reference to an E12 520i and it indicates K jet injection and it's an '83 model (Carfolio). A Japanese brochure calls it out as a model but gives no specs for it. No European or US E12 sales brochure (of 6 different ones)calls it out. Do you have a picture of the engine?

Yeah no problem:

That's the motor, a friend said it looked like a k-jet...
And here's a couple pictures...

Hope you like

From what I read and can see this doesn't look like the kugelfisher setup like that I've seen on the net? I can't see the pump that it shows on all the pictures of the kugelfisher engines in the 2002tii...?
Any ideas?

That's K-Jetronic. Did the car come from Japan? Email the BMW archives with the VIN and they'll tell you where it was delivered and when.

Yes, that is no Kugelfisher, but a K-jet like I've seen in the E21 318i (105hp). The air intake seems home-made. I never heard of a K-jet in an E12 though.
Some basic info about the Kugelfisher 520i is here:

I saw such a car only once, at a classic car gathering.

It defiantly looks factory fitted, the intake is a tad ropey but the rest looks legit. Gunna give the chassis number a bash tonight and email it off to one of those emails above see what I can find out about the car
