Only 5% of Oz-delivered 1986-89 E24s got the close-ratio five speed (or 10 cars per year, if you prefer). About 15% got the OD 5spd. The rest were autos.
Not sure whether it'll fit your 520i (I'm assuming yours is an M10-engined 4 cyl, yes?), but just have a question mark about it, as there was an M20 baby six E12 520/6 (not 'i') as well. Someone here or (more likely, if it's a 4) over at one of the 2002 boards will have tried this 5spd trick and will tell you what hardware you need to make it fit.
