He would make about 3 trips a year, combining vacation with searches for good deals on Porche 911 and 912's. The money he made on his Porsches basically paid for his travel.
He determined that he could buy Eastern Canada and NorthEast Porsches because of the deflated values due rusty cars. He would find about 6-7 cars on the east coast and plan a trip around the locations. His rule was that out of that number he could find at least one to bring home and resell. He looked for very good examples, being very picky. He did well with this program for about 5 years, bringing home about 2-3 cars a year. His numbers stayed quite consistent. He looked at some real crap cars, which were advertised as not winter driven, etc. However, he did always have to look at most of the cars on his list before buying. These were Porsches, so one would like to think the odds were better at finding nice ones compared to most other cars.
It was interesting to watch him do this, but he eventually tired of the game.
So, I can say yes... it is possible. I saw a few of his cars and he was able to make out on the program. However, the odds were poor on finding nice cars.
This was in the 70's and early 80's, so these were not really old cars he was dealing in.
