I checked out my chrome headlight trim rings ('76 530i) - no rust or pitting, all 3 tabs are intact on each ring - there are a few dull spots on the chrome - plain old Windex seems to clean them up a bit, but they might require a bit of a polish with some sort of mild metal polish.
