My guess is the white plastic was a water barrier. 30 years later I've been in my doors, because things need fixing, and only found stains in a few areas on the pressboard.

Just preference, but that's not enough to trade for dealing with fooling with the plastic to get to the innards. I spray painted the stains, keep the drains clean, check for any rust starting.

My guess for your (floors ? ) getting wet in the back is water leaking in the tops of the tail lights. Bad foam gasket, chrome seal.

Run water off the back window, watch it go in the trunk seams. Look under the the trunk mat, you'll most likely see little rivers headed for the back seat wall; where it flows under the back seat into the floor wells.

Be careful trying to tighten old rusty, crunchy light mount nuts, they tend to break out of the plastic to cause real fixing problems. You can run tape over the tops of the tail lights to help the water flow over, not through them.
