Shortening the shift lever increase the leverage pressure on the bolts holding the shift tower to the transmission. Make sure you go through the mount bolts on the trans and refresh them with good bolts, and use loctite to hold them in place. Since the bolts on the back of the trans go in horizontally, aggressive shifting works them loose, and the tower being flopping up and down vertically at the lever, making rear gears (2 and 4) difficult to engage on the 4 speed and 5/OD trans.
OK, now tell me you are not going to shift aggressively with the short shifter in place.. ;>}
