If slop is your problem check out the bushings, etc, if you want a project you can do what I did, In my racecar I kept tearing up the e12 type shifter so I installed an e30/e28 deal wich required some fab work. basicly there are parts from an e30 m3 that allow you to bolt an e28 style shifter to the e12 trans but hen you need to weld a plate to hold up the rear of the "shift tower" and maybe shorten it to get it to fit the whole for the e12, lastly then you can install any short shit kit you want. I don't like super short shifts as other guys said to much effort required to shift so I used a shifter out of an z3 , turned out real nice and no more shifter problems
