I've not really tried a short shifter that didn't have drawbacks (i.e. more notchy, more effort) though some are executed better than others. I think I've actually experienced only one on an E12 and it wasn't very good. The one on my M7 is a conglomeration of BMW parts (I think mostly E36 or Z3) and it's OK but not great.
The stock shifter on my '84 733i (260 tranny) is like butter and I wouldn't mess with it.
I think if I were to do one on an E12 I would not try to be too radical and try to cut the throws too short.
