I installed a UUC short shifter kit in my 80 528i in the late 1990's and have been very satisfied with it. The short shift does require additional effort, is more notchey but in a good way. I have a Metric Mechanic tranny with over 150K miles. Shifts are very precise going into each gear (don't know if MM tranny also contributes to this feature) and there is no sloppiness or play in the shifter after all these years. I don't drive many miles per year so I guess I have way less than 100K total miles on the shifter. Definitely an improvement over stock.

If I recall correctly, Roundel ran a short shifter comparison many years ago and I believe the UUC came out on top.

For what it's worth, I also have a Rogue Engineering short shifter in my 98 E39 that is fine also. No other experience with other brands but I am a UUC and Rogue fan.
