Auxillary fan?...76 530i..Extra rad cooling....

Is the fan in front of the rad for the AC? How is it triggered to come on? I dont use my AC so is it possible to run this Aux fan when stuck in traffic on a hot day by hooking it up to a toggle switch? Anyone done this? CK
