I think 76 had a fan switch on the original radiators, but it might have started later. But there should be a switch down by the lower radiator hose, probably in the outlet itself. Two wires, pretty obvious. It should be a 91C switch, but they can get tired, also if the radiator is too bad, the water can be cool enough to not turn the switch on as it is cool, but too little flow to cool the car.
The 530i fan is on the small side, 528's used much larger fans, but they might be work to shoehorn in there. I also used one off a 320i on my old Bavaria which came with a 530i style fan, it's larger and has more blades. Volvos and Mercedes also used that style for a long time.
