If the car is rust free and in decent shape then hacking it to convert to electric may make no sense. Prior to anything my suggetsion would be to create a Bil of Materials (BOM) to deteremine the approximate cost of said project. If the BOM comes in exceptionally high then you may wish to reconsider the project.
If you want to go electric then start with a Datsun 510 or VW rabbit/bug. Yes I understand they are not BMW's however you may go further on a single charge due to the reduction in weight.
