As to variations of 2 litre M10 -- there's only one block and one head, but pistons and combustion chambers are not completely consistent, and there are some detail differences to the head as you move from carbs to l-jet to motronic.
In very broad terms -- it can be done. He needs to be sure the resulting compression ratio will be useful. Alternatively, he could swap just the 318i injection and ignition on to the 2 litre head.
This is a fairly common mod for guys with 2002's here in the US.
