The yellow you see on many engines is cosmoline(sp?). It was put on the engine to protect it during shipping and was supposed to be removed at the dealer prior to sale. Obviously this didn't happen on many cars. We see it here in the US all the time. BMW stopped doing this sometime in the late eighties I believe.
