Those rubber mounts are for cushion...period.

What you are experiencing is a won-out wiper track on the AFM board inside the assembly. Find the posts (or search the FAQ) on how to open the AFM, then carefully inspect the carbon traced segments. I bet you will find a 'spot', where idle is, that is worn. Notice, too, there are two 'wiper' connections to the board, one next to the other. They were sort of a failsafe, if one doesn't work the other will (until it, too, wears out).

Solution: Carefull bend the copper 'arm' to have it contact another area of the carbon segments, or as has been suggested by Mike, move the board (it can be removed form the AFM via removing the wiper arm and connection for the air temp. sensor). Carefully elongate the mounting holes to allow the wiper arm a new path. Doesn't need much, just a new, not worn-out contact point.
