My impression has been, to avoid face slapping, make your deals up front. That is, insurance is to guard against losses you don't wish to cover yourself. It does take time and effort to find that coverage for the best premium, from a trustworthy insurer, but it is their business to listen and serve customers.

The hassles happen if we say nothing, accept the standard (low) premiums based on their standard tables, then attempt to educate the adjusters at the time of the loss. Or, when another driver inflicts damage and their insurance company attempts to set the value of returning the vehicle to the condition it was in prior to the assault.

Blah, blah. The point is, if your car is extraordinary, discuss your opinion with your insurance company before any crashes.
