The VIN for that era should have just seven digits. Assuming that the VIN was 5010956, you have a '76 530i with a 4-speed manual transmission. (The 530i was for the U.S. market only.)
Either car would be a safe car for your daughter to drive. She might like to have 4 doors if she is going to haul her friends around.
I drove my 528i in Mass. for two years. It did fine in the snow once I learned to drive it properly. You could always add a 100 lbs of sand bags or something to the trunk. It does make it easier. The only the real problem driving the car in the snow is the open diff, IMHO. It takes a light touch to keep everything under control.
Put the complete 3.3L engine and injection from the 6er into the 5er and it will put a smile on your face.
