Ours took three pretty good hits in the back with minor to miniscule damage before the pickup nailed us at speed. Still, we drove off and he didn't. Poor car only saw another 60K after that first total. If not for the cowcatchers I'm sure it would have been dead long before. They won't stop everything, but compared to the hit my parked Bav took and what happened to it, the E12 with diving boards holds up very well.
OK, it does make lifting things like heads or transmissions into the trunk a back killer, but that's what cardboard and rugs are for, to drag it over.
