I've had the same trouble with my gas guage before. For me it turned out to be the sending unit found in the tank itself. These are easy to get at (from the top inside your trunk), but a little more difficult to fix. The problem is that they are easily rusted out, the electrical fittings tend to corrode and fall off. I made up new ones and tried to rivit them back on, but ended up loosing a good seal to the fuel below.
New ones, expensive, used ones are usually corroded (around Canada anyway)
