Hi Bill,
I use 10-40 in the winter. I have had engine trouble using 20-50 when it gets in the zero deg. range. The owners manual for my '80 528i gives an oil-range vs temperature chart that works for me.
This year I am planning to put synthetic lube in the tranny because it is unaffected by the cold.
