Try marking the distributor with a pencil mark so you can remember where it was. Then rotate slightly counterclockwise for a little more advance. No pinging on steep hills? Advance a little more. Stop when it pings. Might unleash some more power. It's how I ended up timing my 3.5L transplant. Started at proper tuning point for 528i and then advanced from there.
Also check to make sure your grounds are all good. The L jet ECU's are very reliable, but if the grounds are not good it can have trouble reading the O2 sensor. Any idea as to whether the car is running lean or rich or neither?
