Sounds like you have a severe vacuum leak.
Maybe brake booster. Try squeezing the vacuum hose to the booster with a C clamp and 2 pieces of wood and see if idle improves.
I also wonder if you don't have a crack in the bellows hose between the AFM and the throttle (on the bottom side).
Propane gas from a torch (not lit) can be used to locate the leak. When you get the gas near the leak it will get sucked into the engine through the leak and the idle should pick up. Remember the entire engine is under vacuum. Any air that gets in through that route is not measured by the AFM is is not compensated for. That's why it runs lean. The fact that the bad aux air valve doesn't lean it out suggests to me you might also want to check around the A/C compensation valve (next to aux air valve). Just feed it a little gas also. Your mechanic should have known how to do this, BTW.... But don't rag him. A lot of mechanics get wigged out by these older cars even though they are really quite simple once you know the deal.
If you are in Denver area I might know someone with used booster if that's what it turns out to be. They are pretty reliable but expensive new. I wouldn't hesitate to get a used one.
But test it first!
