Depending what the role of the e12 in your life has, I like option 2. Couple reasons: The car is no longer in the drive "it and forget it" stage of it's life. You now calculate each squeek, tick or ratlle you hear. You probably inspect the oil once you've changed it. I'll bet you make sure to give it as much wax as it can eat.
Point being, You take better care of it, a new head isn't necessary? So why not extract as much performance from that languid straight six as you can? Build it. If your supporting systems can keep up: Brakes, suspension, tires, paint???
Out of curiosity, what would option 2 cost?
