While I don't have concrete proof, it is my strong belief that this coolant pipe is responsible for some of the E12 cooling problems.
When I dismantled the engine from my '79 528i, I noticed that the pipe flakes apart from the inside. The flakes were quite large. I doubt if the pipe would have lasted much longer.
Those flakes have to go somewhere and my suspicion is that they clog up the radiator.
If I were replacing the one on my car, I'd have one made from stainless steel using the old one as a model. (I didn't replace mine because there's an E34 engine in there now.)
