First, deciding upon HOW you plan to build an engine is up to your
driving style and intended use. There are books filed w/info that can
help you determin just what you want to do to the engine and how to go
about it.

For a street motor, I for one would:

1) DO not port the head (it will not help signifcantly!)
2) Use max of 10.5:1 compression pistions
3) probably a schrick 284 deg cam
4) You could use oversize valves (titanitum retainers)for more airflow/rpms (korman valves $50 each!,Ret $180 set)
5) Bore to 1 size less the max bore (just inc ase you or the machine shop makes a mistake!)
6) Have the engine crank/rods/pistons/front pulley/flywheel balanced as an assembly
7) use a light flywheel w/HD clutch

There are LOTS of little tricks to get an odd hp or two.....
