I have an '84 528i e28 with the hydraulic brake boost and an '80 M535i with vacuum servo (remote setup, master cylinder drives two vacuum-boosted slaves which drive the calipers) The 528i set-up is infinitely worse. Also by the time you've added up the accumulator valve block, fluid pressure and level sensors etc not to mention the heavy hydraulic booster I'm sure the vacuum system is lighter and more simple to install. Once the master cylinder is installed you have complete freedom to mount the slaves where you will/can.
