Just thought of one more thing....
I an original 1977 530i owners manual I once read that if the car seems sluggish and starts to loose mileage etc. BMW recommended to run the engine over 5000rpm for 5 miles. This would help remove the carbon buildup in the cylinder head.
I've done this once.... on a 528i --- it did seem to help some.
Maybe try this AND a good fuel cleaner additive. I've used the Castrol one and it seemed ok.
