I am the proud owner of two different types of squeeks.
First is a low grumbling grinding noise when the car is cold. It was definitely the PS Pump and topping off the PS fluid seems to have mitigated the noise. THe fluid was frothy like a head of beer in the PS resevoir. Elsewhere in BMW lore it is recommende to replace the ceramic filter in the PS Pump to improve performance. Available thru the dealer. (#25b on the bitch list)
Second, is the tie rod joints. I installed new tie rods a year ago and they were pretty squeeky when steered to extremes. If the tie rods are more than 75K miles old they may be suspect as well as the idler arm bearing. The test is easy, jack the car up, turn the steeering wheel and get under the car to check for tie rod play. New rod ends are approx. $50 each thru ALLBMW.com
