Certainly possible that a binding AFM could cause it. Rarer in 528i's than 530i I think itcan happen.
Pushing the door open from the airfilter side, aside from the initial 'click' of the fuel pump contacts, it should feel smooth.
I bothers me that the car warm idles at the same rpm with an aux air valve that adjusted partially open as with one that is shut. Not sure what it means yet.
I thinking that there is a combination of things going on here.
Please remove and inspect the hose between the throttle and the AFM, unless you know it is new.
I'm wondering about some leaks/cracks underneath.
Also check any other hoses.
Also it would be good to measure the fuel pressure when weather permits.
