Besides hoses and belts, old Bimmers need the fuses replaced and the contacts on the fuse box gently cleaned with 400 grit sandpaper or that Scotch plastic steel wool stuff (fine). Also gently wiggle all the relays to make good contact. It won't hurt to replace the vacuum hoses also. If the problem persists at least you will be in a position to reliably troubleshoot the system.
